East Main Street Downtown Plan Presented

Radford, VA-The East Main Street Downtown Plan was presented to the Radford City Council at a Work Session held on October 25, 2021. The project, conducted by the New River Valley Regional Commission with design assistance from Mattern and Craig, as well as Cooper Carry, included a study of the business district from Tyler Avenue to Harrison Street. Elements of the project include streetscape design, parking, building façade concepts, traffic calming, lighting, wayfinding, signage, pedestrian safety, as well as the use of public spaces.

City Council and staff are excited as the next phases of the project begin. Stay tuned for information outlining the upcoming steps in the East Main Downtown Plan.

Mayor Horton stated, “"For the past three years we have been working to enhance all of Main Street in Radford and now we turn our focus to the East Main Street area with the help of this survey and report.  After many meetings with citizens identifying areas for improvements and upgrades, we feel like we can invest wisely in the future of the City of Radford to enhance the quality of life for residents and to encourage guests to spend more time in our community.  This is an exciting time for all our partners along Main Street including business and building owners as we work together to help grow Radford's economy and to provide pathways to prosperity that can help define the next few decades.

I am appreciative of the work of the New River Valley Regional Commission team as well as the City Staff and the thousands of citizens who participated in this process.  We have a general road map to the future in our community and will be taking steps over the next year to flesh out action plans that will refresh our Downtown business district."

The project proposals and presentations can be found on the City of Radford website and the work session can be viewed on the City of Radford YouTube page.
